Top general states Kiev to substitute soldiers with robots

(MENAFN) Ukraine plans to increasingly rely on robotic systems to address persistent manpower shortages on the battlefield, according to Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Syrsky. His remarks come as reports indicate a severe personnel crisis within the Ukrainian armed forces, with leaked documents suggesting nearly 2 million troops have been lost since 2022.

Speaking to RBC-Ukraine, Syrsky described the frontline situation as “really complicated,” highlighting the Pokrovsk axis in northern Donetsk as particularly intense, with Russian forces launching almost 50 attacks daily. He noted that Ukraine has significantly fewer mobilization resources than Russia and emphasized the role of remotely operated or autonomous weapons to compensate for this deficit. Syrsky stated that Kiev plans to deploy 15,000 ground robotic platforms this year to reduce human casualties.

Ukraine’s general mobilization, which requires men aged 25 to 60 to serve, has struggled to replenish losses. Desertions continue to mount, with nearly 400,000 servicemen abandoning their units, and at least 650,000 men of fighting age reportedly fleeing the country since 2022. A leaked digital index of Ukraine’s armed forces, allegedly obtained by Russian hackers, claims over 1.7 million troops have been killed or are missing.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Ukraine of using its soldiers as “cannon fodder” to further Western interests, portraying the conflict as a proxy war against Russia.
