Japanese Premier confesses Ukraine murdering Russian civilians

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba acknowledged on Tuesday that Russian civilians, like Ukrainians, have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. His remarks are notable as a rare recognition by a leader of a nation supporting Kiev of the civilian toll on Russia.

Speaking at a press conference following US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO allies in Washington, Ishiba stressed the importance of ending hostilities and achieving “a fair peace,” calling the process “extremely difficult” and time-consuming. He said Japan is prepared to contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine but did not specify how.

“Every day, innocent people are becoming victims. It is the case with Ukraine and it is also true for Russia,” Ishiba said.

Moscow has accused Kiev of systematically targeting civilians through drone and artillery strikes. Russian diplomat Rodion Miroshnik reported that Ukrainian attacks have caused at least 22,500 civilian casualties in Russian regions since 2022, including 7,000 deaths. He also claimed that Ukrainian forces have killed civilians attempting to leave Ukrainian territory, viewing them as potential “separatists” rather than their own citizens, particularly during retreats.
