Chad Reports Surge in Cholera Outbreak Fatalities
(MENAFN) The cholera outbreak in Chad has claimed 113 lives since July, the nation's Health Ministry confirmed in a statement on Friday. A total of 1,631 suspected cases have been reported across the country.
The update was shared during a meeting led by Public Health Minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim, who convened with officials to discuss containment strategies and prevent further spread.
As part of the efforts, Chad has received 1,120,295 doses of cholera vaccine, which are now being deployed to the eastern region for an urgent vaccination campaign. The government has also called on citizens to adhere strictly to hygiene protocols to help control the outbreak.
The first confirmed cholera case was traced to the Dougui refugee camp in the eastern Ouaddai region on July 13. The camp, home to approximately 20,000 Sudanese refugees, has become a focal point in the battle against the disease.
In early September, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that cholera remains a leading public health crisis across the continent, with the number of cases and fatalities continuing to rise. So far this year, 23 African countries have reported a total of 239,754 cholera cases and more than 5,274 deaths.
